The dragons also lost some of their skin, which is hanging in the trees and clinging to the rocks of moss lichen. The two fought for years and were an equal match. When neither dragon could win the fight, they crawled back to their caves and cried. According to legend, the dragons' hot tears are the source of the Sol Duc's Hot Springs.

The Pools

Sol Duc Hot Springs consists of 3 Mineral Hot Springs soaking pools and one Freshwater Pool. Temperatures vary between the pools allowing you to find the perfect one to relax and soak in. If you get too hot, take a cool dip into our Freshwater pool.

Mineral Water Wading Pool - approx 99F / 37C / 6-8" deep
Large Mineral Fountain Pool - approx 101F / 38C / 3' deep
Medium Mineral Pool - approx 104F / 40C / 3' deep

* large and medium mineral pools have graduated steps
** large mineral pool also contains a wheelchair ramp

Freshwater Pool - varies seasonally between 50F - 85F / 10C - 30C

The springs receive part of their water from rain and melting snow which seep through cracks in the sedimentary rocks to unknown depths where they mingle with water and gasses coming from cooling volcanic rocks. The mineralized waters then rise to the surface along a larger crack or fissure.

All of the Mineral Hot Springs are drained nightly, cleaned, then fill back up again naturally.

Each mineral pool is also closed twice daily to allow for a 'resting period'. During this time the pool is being tested for bacteria to ensure the health and safety of our guests.

Pool testing times are as follows, during which each pool will be closed:

Small Wading Pool - Maximum bather load 10
closed 11am - Noon
closed 4pm - 5pm

Medium Pool - Maximum bather load 15
closed 1pm - 2pm
closed 6pm - 7pm

Large Fountain Pool - Maximum bather load 40
closed Noon - 1pm
closed 5pm - 6pm
